It’s no secret that Louisiana is home to some of the most delicious food in the nation. However, what may be a secret is the identity of the ingredients that make the Louisiana cuisine so savory. Behind every classic creole or Cajun dish is a list of ingredients that have been dubbed “The Holy Trinity,” and they are the hallmarks of Southern cooking. So, what makes up the Holy Trinity of cooking? Let’s find out!

The Holy Trinity of Cajun cuisine is going to be made up of three ingredients, and each of these ingredients is a different vegetable. They are as follows:

  1. Onion
  2. Celery
  3. Bell Pepper

Each vegetable brings a unique flavor and seasoning to the dishes that make up Louisiana cuisine. Onion, Celery, and Bell Peppers are all used in some of the most famous Southern dishes, including Jambalaya, Gumbo, and Cajun Stew.

Other vegetables can be paired with the trinity as well. Garlic is often added in for additional flavor. Also, the dishes made using the Holy Trinity can often be garnished with parsley.
